Introducing our new Shepherd Hut on the Terrace by Pumphrey & Weston Ltd, a local business based in Withiel, Cornwall.

Founded by school friends Mike and Byron in 2015, Pumphrey & Weston create bespoke, beautifully hand-crafted shepherd huts tailored to your requirements and using many responsibly sourced materials from the south-west.

One of three huts commissioned by The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, our bar hut has now been installed on the terrace next to the Glasshouse and will be offering a range of hot and cold drinks plus, ice-cream from Callestick Farm.

The build...

The hut itself measures 12ft x 7ft and has been clad externally using featheredge oak with a curved and corrugated roof.

The interior is hand crafted and the walls are insulated using sheep’s wool whilst the floor has been insulated using recycled bottles! The cabinetry is bespoke and made on site using wood sourced from Duchy Timber.

The pointing and arches are made from oak which has been formed to shape using a specially made jig that was developed and produced in their own workshops.

We can’t wait for you to experience our new ‘Hut on the Terrace’ and believe that its charm and style represents perfectly what we have to offer here at the Nursery.

JUNE 12, 2016 - The Sunday Times Home

"While hut owners curate their retreats to reflect their fantasy lives, in the manner of Marie Antoinette, it’s the makers who seem to be living the dream. Friends since boyhood, Byron Weston and Mike Pumphrey built their first shepherd’s hut together during downtime from their day jobs in the oil industry, and were astonished by rave reviews on Airbnb. “I was an engineer working mostly in Africa and Southeast Asia, deciding on the safest locations to place oil rigs and wind farms,” Weston recalls. “Mike was a ship’s skipper surveying for shipping charts and wind farms.” Now they fit their hutting around fishing and surfing in north Cornwall, working in the barn next door to Mike’s childhood home in Withiel."

The Shepherd’s Retreat is a handsome hut by Pumphrey & Weston. The 21in cast-iron wheels are made at a local foundry, and the fully insulated body has curved ash beams, a sash window and a traditional stable door. The exterior walls are galvanised corrugated metal; inside, there’s tongue-and-groove cladding painted in Farrow & Ball. A built-in double bed, a woodburning stove on a slate hearth and a kitchenette with a solid beech worktop can be added at extra cost."
