It is important to us to keep our designs proportionate to the traditional shepherd’s huts, whilst at the same time coming up with designs and ideas to best utilise the space available. How you wish to have your hut is completely your choice, but for a little bit of assistance , I have listed our most popular and effective layout ideas for a 14ft, 16ft and 18ft hut.
14ft - The ruthern hut
An image of a Ruthern Hut at Freerange Escapes, N.Cornwall
Our most popular 14ft hut layout mirrors the traditional design, featuring a stable door at one end and the bed at the other. The kitchenette is compact, offering the flexibility of a gas or electric hob based on available power. Above the kitchen is a painted poplar wood shelving unit. Nestled in one corner is a Hobbit wood-burner, placed on a raised slate hearth with ample space for wood storage below. Enhancing the functional layout, a fold-down oak table/breakfast bar is positioned beneath the double window at the hut's center. This choice is ideal for those who don't require an ensuite setup. If you opt for a shower fitted to the outside of the hut, 5% VAT will apply.

16ft - the lundy hut
The Lundy Hut, up in East Devon
The Lundy is a beautifully balanced 16 x 7ft shepherd hut (4.9 x 2.15m), offering a practical and comfortable layout while retaining the charm and proportions of a traditional hut. Despite its compact footprint, the space feels bright and spacious, making it ideal as a guest retreat, holiday let, home office, or off-grid escape.
This size and layout combination is one of our most popular designs. At one end, there is a beautifully finished shower room complete with a toilet, washbasin, and heated towel rail. At the opposite end, a comfortable double bed offers generous under-bed storage.
The kitchen features a traditional Belfast sink and can be fitted with either a gas or electric hob to suit your preference. Above, a painted poplar shelf provides practical open storage, while a bespoke cupboard is designed to house a small fridge neatly out of sight.
Alongside the kitchen sits a raised slate hearth, ready for either a Hobbit wood burner or an Everhot stove. Nearby, a fold-down oak table and breakfast bar adds flexibility for dining or working, while handcrafted oak coat hooks complete the space with a practical finishing touch.
Price £36,155 Ex VAT, £37,963 Inc VAT.
The Daymer Hut at Tregoose, N.Cornwall
The Daymer – 18 x 7ft Shepherd Hut
The Daymer is our larger 18 x 7ft shepherd hut, offering additional space and flexibility while retaining the warmth and character of a traditional hut. Sharing many similarities with the popular 16ft Lundy layout, this design includes a beautifully crafted kitchen, shower room, comfortable double bed with a bedside partition, fold-down oak table, and the choice between a Hobbit wood burner or an Everhot stove set on a raised slate hearth.
The extra two feet in length creates a noticeably more spacious feel and allows for a larger kitchen area with room for an oven, making the hut particularly well suited to longer stays or holiday accommodation. Above the kitchen, handcrafted oak dresser-style shelving provides both character and practical storage, while solid oak coat hooks add thoughtful finishing touches throughout.
The Daymer can be configured with either a traditional stable door or upgraded double doors to create a brighter, more open connection to the outdoors.

INTERIOR COLOURS
Most customers choose one colour for the walls and another colour for features such as fire stands, kitchens or any cabinetry. The Farrow and Ball range has a great choice of colours. Below are some of our absolute favourites.
THE HOBBIT STOVE or EVERHOT?
For a shepherd hut, the Hobbit woodburner offers compact, off-grid warmth and charm with a real flame, while the Everhot provides clean, practical heating and cooking but usually demands too much power for an off-grid hut setup.
